Our Story
Our founding member, Hanzhi Ruan, came to South Africa in 2001 with her parents as investment immigrants where she witnessed her parents' hard work and dedication to stay relevant in South Africa. She graduated with a BSC: Actuarial and financial math from the University of Pretoria in 2006 and later acquired an MBA degree from The Henley School of Business in 2016. She acquired 14 years of experience in the financial industry and was head-hunted by various local banks in South Africa because of her ability to deliver dynamic business solutions.
In 2008, she met a well-known lawyer, Kineil Muthray, who had a diverse law firm that had an ethos that catered for the specific needs of the Chinese community. The synergy between the two gave rise to the creation and establishment of the Company that is known today as Oriental Unicorn.

Our Value Proposition
In South Africa, many in the Chinese community have encountered problems in life, work, and entrepreneurship. Many Chinese individuals and businesses lack the appropriate awareness of the law and regulations, and attempt to resolve stumbling blocks without having the requisite knowledge. We have often experienced that problems commonly occur when Chinese individuals and businesses attempt to apply Chinese law and understanding to a South African landscape and are faced with an unsustainable social and economic environment, plagued with adverse tax and legal consequences, and creating a state of insecurity and uncertainty.
As far back as 2016, Oriental Unicorn has identified that the legal, tax, and financial systems of China and South Africa are extremely different. Oriental Unicorn has thus dedicated its operations to exclusively assist and support the Chinese community. With the support of hand selected professional from different industries, we have developed our business model to be a comprehensive one-stop shop for the Chinese community. These professionals are captains of their industry and strive to better serve the Chinese community in South Africa.
Oriental Unicorn currently has the service of 12 professional lawyers, 4 certified accountants, 2 auditors, 3 information technology experts and 2 insurance agents. Our service extends to the development of package services specifically for Chinese customers. This data model has been created and revised by three of Oriental Unicorn’s full-time actuaries who strive to achieve the best cost-effective package services. We want to provide more than just support services but also to create a platform and network that allows for the interaction between Chinese and South African business systems.
